WIFI on steriods coming to Wilmington, NC next month.

Last year the FCC voted to open up unused frequencies previously reserved for broadcast television for use in implementing "super wifi" also known as White Spaces. Wireless broadband offered in White Spaces will be faster, better and farther reaching than anything we have seen thus far. Because it will use the same spectrum as broadcast TV, any area that can receive OTA broadcast can potentially receive this wireless signal as well. This new spectrum also boasts stronger signals, allowing for deeper pentration thru walls and ceilings. With more speed and a stronger signal, deployed in a more universally accessible spectrum, this technology should finally allow for easier roll-out to previously unserviceable areas of the country.

White spaces brings with it tons of potential for new devices and applications. It is faster than WiFi so it can handle more data. It can bring (nearly) free Internet access to the most remote areas of the country, places that can’t get WiFi.

It can aid in education. It can improve medicine. It can even make your favorite team win on Sundays (well, maybe not).

Because it uses broadcast television signals, any place that can pick up a broadcast TV signal should be able to tap into White Spaces. A large range of wireless frequencies have always been reserved for broadcast television, much of it unused. Researchers at Microsoft, Google, Dell and other companies, like Spectrum Bridge, developed methods to let data devices like PCs use those blank frequencies.

The new technology requires the developement and maintenance of a database which will be used to track and assign these frequencies to devices deployed for use. That database needs “database administrators.” Earlier this year, the FCC selected nine companies to do the job — all that applied — including Google and Spectrum Bridge. They will be allowed to charge a small fee for their efforts.

Spectrum Bridge will be the first to delpoy this technology and they have chosen Wilmington to do it. Hopefully it will not take long for this technology to spread to other areas of the country.

How Ocean Marketing got pwned

If there ever was a better example, I’ve never seen it in all it’s glory like this.

In an effort to prove what a big man he is, Paul Christoforo, a PR rep for Ocean Marketing, tries to out douche a paying customer who knows how to use the Internet…….and loses.

On Dec. 16, a customer known only as "Dave" began a series of e-mail exchanges with Ocean Marketing, the PR firm that represents N-Control, a maker of modified game controllers for hardcore gamers and disabled people. Dave had pre-ordered a pair of Playstation 3 Avenger controllers from N-Control, but discovered that he would not get his controllers in time for Christmas. He e-mailed Ocean Marketing and began an exchange with Paul Christoforo, the company’s PR rep. Dave discovered that new orders for the Avenger would receive $10 off, but he would get no such discount.

In just one example of how *not* to respond to customer need, here is Christoforo’s response to one of Dave’s more heated emails…..

"Really … Welcome to the Internet ? Son Im 38 I wwebsite as on the internet when you were a sperm in your daddys b-lls and before it was the internet, thanks for the welcome to message wurd up," Christoforo said. "Grow up you look like a complete child bro. I Don’t have my controller so im gonna cry to the world … Really ?? Hey take that free time and do something more productive. All you had to do was check the like everyone else , people have inquired but you’re the douchiest of them all J."

Sprint going for their own 4G LTE network.

Looks like Sprint is going to have a busy month come October! Having already announced they will begin carrying the iPhone in mid-October, it looks like they will now announce their 4G LTE service launching early next year.

Sprint’s 4G LTE network would give the carrier a network on par with Verizon’s, supplying the nation’s third-largest carrier with an additional selling point beyond attractive pricing plans and an unlimited data offering. By employing LTE technology, it will be able to tap into a larger pool of vendors already racing to build 4G devices and equipment at a lower price. The additional network will also allow Sprint to offload some of its 3G data traffic onto 4G, relieving a growing burden.

Sprint Chief Executive Dan Hesse previously said Sprint would formally unveil its 4G plans at an event on October 7, pushing back what originally was scheduled for an announcement by the middle of the year.

Sprint is upping their game in the next 12 months.

Google Makes NEW Waves in the Mobile Arena

Google is set to unveil it’s first 100% Google developed and executed mobile phone in Tuesday. Named Nexus One, if successful it will give the search giant a major stronghold in the cell phone market. With the popularity of its apps like Google Maps and the public embrace of the Android operating system, there is no reason to think Google will not hit a home run with this next adventure.
“The tea leaves and crystal balls are all pointing to the same thing: The future is in mobile devices,” said Ramon Lamas, mobile device analyst at IDC. “With its own phone, Google can control the hardware, the software and can put together its own mobile roadmap from there.” The company is expected to unveil its smartphone plans at a scheduled “Android press gathering” at its headquarters in Mountain View, Calif. at 1 p.m. ET. The Nexus One smartphone will be wider but slimmer than Apple’s (AAPL, Fortune 500) iPhone and faster than Motorola’s (MOT, Fortune 500) Droid, according to a review by tech blog Engadget. The new smartphone was built by mobile device maker HTC, but the specifications were all ordered by Google. It will run Google’s Android 2.1 software on a lightning-fast processor.
The Nexus One will be available on T-Mobile and directly for purchase from Google.
